On Saturday 5 October 2024, Traditional Modena Balsamic Vinegar P.D.O. and Balsamic Vinegar of Modena P.G.I. took centre stage in an important international television showcase: James Martin’s Saturday Morning programme, broadcast on ITV, the UK‘s third national network.

During the episode, chef Francesco Mazzei, flanked by celebrity presenter James Martin, talked about Modena’s Black Gold, showing the British public its versatility and authentic value.

Exceptional tastings and showcooking

Some of the most evocative moments were the preparation of a Florentine steak, enhanced by the unmistakable touch of Balsamic Vinegar of Modena P.G.I. and the pure tasting of the Traditional Modena Balsamic Vinegar P.D.O. Extra Old (aged over 25 years) led by the Italian chef who offered it to his famous colleagues Sat Bains and Lesley Waters in the most refined way: with a ceramic spoon, perfect to appreciate every nuance of flavour.

A journey into the heart of Modena tradition

The event provided an extraordinary opportunity to bring the British public closer to the history, ageing processes and production techniques that make Traditional Modena Balsamic Vinegar P.D.O. a unique and certified product.

Through this media exposure, viewers had the opportunity to learn more about real Balsamic Vinegar, learning to distinguish the authenticity of Protected Designation of Origin (P.D.O.) and Protected Geographical Indication (P.G.I.) from imitation products.

Participation in the programme helped to strengthen the presence of Traditional Modena Balsamic Vinegar P.D.O. on the British market, inviting consumers to discover and seek out the excellence of a unique product, an ambassador of Made in Italy around the world.

‘Batterie d’Eccellenza’: the first competition for the best batteries of Traditional Modena Balsamic Vinegar P.D.O. at the Enzo Ferrari Museum

In the evocative setting of the Enzo Ferrari House Museum in Modena, the first edition of the ‘Batterie d’Eccellenza’ competition was held on Friday 27 September, a tribute to the excellence and tradition that make Traditional Modena Balsamic Vinegar P.D.O. a unique product in the world.

An event that united two Modenese excellences recognised throughout the world: Traditional Modena Balsamic Vinegar P.D.O. and the myth of the Ferrari Reds, ambassadors of Italian quality, tradition and innovation.

The initiative, organised by the Consortium for the Protection of Traditional Modena Balsamic Vinegar P.D.O. in collaboration with the Consorteria of Spilamberto, with the support of the International Academy of Sensory Analysis and Good Senses, represented a challenge of the highest level, with the participation of producers, experts and enthusiasts, celebrating the value of the historic drums, symbol of a centuries-old tradition.

The samples had to pass rigorous organoleptic tests in order to participate, demonstrating how the quality of Traditional Modena Balsamic Vinegar P.D.O. is the result of craftsmanship and handed-down history.

Awards and acknowledgements

After careful selection by a jury of professional tasters, including chefs, sommeliers and members of the Consorteria, 23 samples of Traditional Modena Balsamic Vinegar P.D.O. were awarded:


  • 5 Platinum Medals with the highest score, awarded to batteries of extraordinary quality. At the top of the ranking, with a perfect score of 100/100, was the Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Grand Master Maurizio Fini (San Geminiano). Mirco Casari‘s Acetaia, Massimo Malpighi’s Tenuta del Cigno and Roggiani e Spallanzani followed with two medals.

  • 18 Gold Medals, testifying to the very high level of the competition, were awarded to producers such as La Rugiada, Leonardo Giacobazzi, Acetaia di Giorgio, Fattorie Giacobazzi and many others.


An exclusive tasting with Gambero Rosso

The award ceremony was preceded by an exceptional tasting organised with the support of Gambero Rosso Academy and conducted by food critic Francesca Romana Barberini. The guests, guided by Consortium Vice President Leonardo Giacobazzi and Grand Master Maurizio Fini, were able to taste different expressions of Traditional Modena Balsamic Vinegar P.D.O.: from Affinato (aged 12 years), to Extra Vecchio (over 25 years), to the highly selected single-vintage aged in juniper, cherry and oak barrels.

Chef Igles Corelli, present at the event, spoke passionately about his relationship with Traditional Modena Balsamic Vinegar P.D.O., describing it as an iconic product that enhances every preparation thanks to its complexity and versatility.

The importance of tradition and historical batteries

During the evening, Consortium President Enrico Corsini emphasised the value of the competition: ‘Traditional Modena Balsamic Vinegar P.D.O. is the result of a unique process in the world, based on the care of the batteries of casks in which the vinegar matures and refines over time. This event celebrates not only the product, but also the passion, dedication and know-how of our producers’.

Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena PDO takes centre stage at the Arena di Verona for the 101st Opera Festival

An unforgettable event saw Traditional Modena Balsamic Vinegar P.D.O. as the undisputed star at the Arena di Verona. On the evening of 11th August, the Consortium for the Protection of Traditional Modena Balsamic Vinegar P.D.O. welcomed 100 guests, including members, producers, and institutional representatives, to attend Beethoven’s monumental Ninth Symphony, a work symbolic of unity and brotherhood.

The event was not only a cultural occasion of extraordinary prestige but also a significant milestone in the international promotion campaign led by the Consortium. As highlighted by President Enrico Corsini, the collaboration with the Fondazione Arena di Verona stems from a targeted strategy to strengthen the positioning of Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena PDO among Italian excellences:

“Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena represents the art, culture, and craftsmanship typical of our region. Its ancient production technique deserves to be celebrated as a work of Italian art.”

An exceptional moment was also offered by the welcome cocktail, where the famous ‘Oro Nero’ enhanced the gastronomic experience in the exclusive setting of the Star Roof, the Corporate Experience space overlooking Piazza Bra.

During the evening, the symbolic photograph of Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena PDO – signed by maestro photographer Maurizio Galimberti – a tribute to Italian art and tradition accompanied by the payoff ‘Piacere elevato ad Arte’ (Pleasure elevated to Art), was distributed to guests as a special invitation to visit the Modena vinegar cellars, guardians of a unique product.

The initiative was repeated on 28 August, aiming to create a cultural bond between two temples of Italian beauty: the opera of the Arena of Verona and the vinegar cellars of Modena. Two excellences that tell the story, tradition and passion of an extraordinary territory.

“Le Terre Del Balsamico” at Merano Wine Festival 2023

The second-level Consortium that brings together the Balsamic Vinegar of Modena P.G.I. and the Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena P.D.O. Consortiums makes its first appearance at the Merano event

Balsamic Vinegar of Modena will be in the spotlight from 3 to 6 November at the 2023 Merano Wine Festival with a series of tastings and pairings at the “Le Terre del Balsamico” stand in the Gourmet Arena in the Kurhaus of Meran.

Merano Wine Festival is an annual event that attracts wine producers from all over the world, artisans of flavour, leading chefs as well as thousands of visitors, offering the possibility of accompanying the tastings with gastronomic specialties, craft beers, grappas and quality foods. These also include Modena Balsamic Vinegar, present under the aegis of the second-level Consortium “Le Terre del Balsamico”, a joint project involving the Consortiums established to safeguard Balsamic Vinegar of Modena P.G.I. and Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena P.D.O. and set up with the aim of protecting, raising the profile and promoting the two products, P.D.O. and P.G.I., and the local municipality, as well as consolidating the reputation and image of these designations and developing new commercial opportunities for these two hallmark Modenese and Italian agri-food products.

Merano Wine Festival will therefore be an opportunity to get to know Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena P.D.O., in both the Affinato (minimum 12 years’ ageing) and Extravecchio (minimum 25 years’ ageing) versions. A quality product with unique characteristics, of which around 15,000 litres is produced annually, appreciated by gourmets and the fine dining sector for its harmonious complexity and richness.

For Balsamic Vinegar of Modena P.G.I., the Merano event will represent an opportunity to present the Consortium Profile. This single, clear and immediate information system was created with the aim of providing consumers with an effective tool for identifying the main organoleptic characteristics of the product. Consisting of a logo made up of graphic and descriptive elements, the system communicates the product’s sensory profile in a simple and immediate way, enabling consumers to understand the organoleptic characteristics of the product and make their purchasing choice based on their own tastes and intended uses.
